Did I forget to mention? PRIMITIVE and (I don’t want to) see the world streaming everywhere now!

When I moved back to #vermont in 2015 from the nashville area, I was coming down from one of the most productive songwriting periods in my life. Following the advice of many Music city legends, I spent periods of a month or longer writing a new song every day, writing a whole album in a month, attending songwriter circles and only playing my latest work. . Hungry to start a new project, having left Red River Outlaws back in Tennessee, I was desperate to start collaborating with others. I was responding to any craigslist post that look interesting, scrolling through a half dozen Facebook groups, going out to open mics and jam sessions, in search of a new music tribe to latch on to. . My search eventual led to meetup, and @burlingtonwritersworkshop. I didn’t find a music tribe there that I could latch on to. Instead I found an unexpected opportunity to build my own tribe from scratch. . This conversation is a great time capsule of how beneficial that stumble into workshop leadership became to my musical development and self-esteem. . Even though I took a step back from Bww to focus on family (the ever talented @amtlpaul picking up the songwriting workshop mantle), I can’t help but look back at this a some proverbial lesson in life, desire, social dynamics, leadership, art and creativity. . Whatever is you might be looking for, wherever your looking for it, whoever you think you need to get to the next stage of your development… . You probably have it somewhere inside you, in your own sphere of influence. You can probably build it yourself right where you are, in your own home town. That person you need to help you get up to the next stage? It’s you. If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work, others will see what your building and ask if they can help. Community builders are rare in this world. Your friends and family, acquaintances, and total strangers will notice when you start to become one. Like a child or a plant, if you nurture it long enough it will start to take on a life of its own. If you’ve done your work properly, it might not even need you anymore to keep it alive. 📸: @pixelsby_tm
